I was surprised at how much I liked reading this book. It kept my interest and I read it in one day. Even though at times they both irritated me I liked both Landen and Layla. Even though they occasionally failed they both wanted to do the right thing. They fell hard and fast for each other. Landen was possessive and protective of Layla. I loved that he was willing to chase her including following her out of state. I also liked that they were faithful to each other. No sex with OP after meeting including during a separation. Layla was a virgin and while Landen was not inexperienced as he had girlfriends in the past he was not a manhoe. I liked the HEA ending with epilogue. It made me feel better about their future because at times their relationship was turbulent.

Things though bothered me about the story and the characters. While I recognize that Landen and Layla are young, their immature behavior made them seem younger than their ages. They had too many misunderstandings that could have been easily cleared up with communicating with each other but their insecurities kept getting in their way. They also blew hot and cold with each again due to lack of self esteem and it irritated me. Both had difficult childhoods and/or teen years and this was reflected in the way they thought and acted. It was a depressing story, more than I thought it would be. Also it took too long for the hot sexy times to occur. I realize again they were young but they did not even share a kiss until after they were reunited in their twenties. In addition the story would benefit from further editing.

I got the kindle app version of this story, and I was pleased that the appropriate section breaks were included and there were few typos. (Sometimes I go nuts with these ebooks because the editing is poor and the section breaks are unclear.) The structure of the novel was different three main sections with an appendix and an epilogue. The chapters alternated in giving the perspectives of our two protagonists, and their voices came through distinctly and clearly. I could relate to both hero and heroine.

The story has some explicit sex scenes (not "icky" or kinky, just looooots of details 😳), but you can skim over those parts without missing plot points if that makes you uncomfortable. The language is sometimes unsavory but was in keeping with each character's persona. There is also quite a bit of angst, but [semi-spoiler] you can expect a HEA ending.

During much of the story, I was torn by the message about unconditional love and what the heroine went through in her struggle to love the hero past his anger issues and destructive behavior. On the one hand, I love a story where the couple sticks it out and doesn't give up on their relationship just because things get ugly. "Love conquers all!" "All you need is love!" Who doesn't want to cling to those mantras? But there's ugly... and then there's UGLY. Many women (probably men, too) get sucked into bad relationships, thinking they can love the other person through their issues and fix them, but that's not necessarily realistic. I know from experience that the other person has to *want* to change - you can't make the change for them. When you love someone, it's easy to make excuses for their bad behavior and cover it up to protect them and protect the relationship, [semi-spoiler] like our heroine did for much of the book. I spent a lot of time thinking she deserved way better. That kind of left a bad taste in my mouth - I don't think that loving someone means sticking physically by their side and cleaning up their messes no matter how ugly things get. By the epilogue, though, I felt good about the resolution to the story and hope that most real life stories of men with anger issues enjoy similar success.
This was just as good as the prequel and is a 5 star read! I am still head over heels for Landon. There must be a real life version of him somewhere, right? lol. Layla's roomie was a great addition, too! The games they played with the boys definitely kept the pages turning. The steamy scenes were so good!!! Plenty of details, which always make them even better! There was a twist, which at first, I wasn't really happy with, but the ending turned all of that around! I am really excited to jump into Hold Us Close to see what it will bring!
Blown away by this story, to have two characters completely evolve as teenagers to young adults and each face their demons and push so many boundaries within their own relationship and those of their friends and family was truly inspiring to read. You are not kept still in their journey, this romance blends and explodes with passion and such intense adoration as the characters grow older.

Yes I loved their romance and heated young lust moments but the other challenges they both faced had me truly riveted to the pages. Sometimes I was scared, sometimes I had tears in my eyes and there were times when I smiled and laughed because I was so happy for them. You do go on an incredible journey with these two characters being they are so young, yet they are both really old souls underneath with what they have been dealt in life.

Whilst the Synopsis may lead you to believe that Layla has so many challenges to conquer, I found myself totally surprised with the turn of events with Landen and how it really will have you wondering how their love story will end. There are lots of shocks, secrets and characters that change and will make you love or hate them.

A beautiful romance story that I will treasure and remember - Layla and Landen - love conquers.
