Stalked by danger, will Parker ever find a place to call home?

Greg Lademar is an ordinary and average Army veteran who has settled down with his job as an accountant and his lingering PTSD. He lives a quiet life as a single man, alone on the former blueberry farm he bought from his parents after they retired to Orlando. When a friend who works with animal control asks him to foster Parker, a severely injured dog who has just been rescued from an abusive home, the last thing Greg expects is to be dragged into the mysterious world of the Guardsmen — the bonded pairs of humans and their weredogs, known as Protectors, who are literally the stuff of myths and legends.
Greg’s life is turned upside down by unexpected events involving Parker and the strange Guardsmen pair Marcus and Alex Stephanek, but far more dangerous to him is the man who used to own Parker and holds a grudge for having “his” dog taken from him. A game of cat and mouse ensues, with more on the line than even Greg ever thought possible his life, and the life of Parker, who has become more important to him than Greg ever imagined a rescue dog could be.

Welcome to the world of Guardsmen, bonded pairs of weredogs and their partners who live on the edges of society -- worshipped and feared in turn, sheltered as much as they are shunned, Guardsmen mates live, love, and die together.

AUTHOR UPDATE I really appreciate all the kind reviews! Thank you so much! I have uploaded a new file to correct some of the typos/errors pointed out to me by folks; that said, if you see any more, feel free to email me (link in the book). I really am blown away by the positive reaction to this book, and don't worry the next Guardsmen story is currently being written!

While I have not completed this novel I will say 2 thinks that have me pissed so far...
1) there was no series number on this book so was completely unaware that there was a previous novel...very frustrating to read this and not know any of the history that is going on.
2) I am an unlimited member - how in the heck does it make sense for the 2nd book to be an unlimited and the 1st book double the price is not! This is the second series that recently has some books in the unlimited club and some out! Is that fair to the readers or somebodies bank account!
UPDATE: Yeah while this book would have been a top series for me just very disappointed that no order if the series were marked. While I would want to read book one I feel the story is ruined now.

Parker Sanctuary A Guardsmen Novel edition by Cooper West Romance eBooks Reviews

I loved book Protector and thrilled to have a sequel, original characters, at least 3, are in it but two different main characters . Howell well developed mad villain. Very good. Liked sister Rebecca, reminds me of Joshua's sister in Black Wolves of Boston.
Rebecca could drive legal improvements for protectors.
I loved the first book. This one is more serious, and the Buffy storyline was too much for me to take. But Buffy was only a small part of reading Parker's Sanctuary and the rest was pretty good. Marcus and Alex seemed to have got all serious since Book 1. There were quite a few spelling errors. The plotline is about a protector and a guardian working towards a relationship that they're not that sure of.
Now I will say I was concerned on how this would play out. A pet turning into someone's lover is....well...could go wrong. But it was written perfectly and after taking a day or two before writing the review...I MISS the characters.

You really feel for them and I couldn't put the book down.

I am hoping there is a follow up book with Greg and Parker...moving into a bit more action pact scenes but I do highly recommend this book for any science fiction geeks that are hopeless romantics.
I am sorry I bought it. Illogical AND predictable, a deadly combination.
One of the main characters is suffering from PTSD and has nightmares from war, but mainly because his service dog got killed in battle. I like dogs, but please!!!! Also he is depicted as having a lifelong experience with fostering dogs, but is always surprised with something the main dog character (-)) does, which frankly got VERY MUCH on my nerves.
Also I frankly got no idea why are bonded pairs so important. There is no mention of them doing anything special!!!!
The Institute is described as a good and capable, with a lot of resources at its back and call (no idea why, protectors&gurdians seem like any married couple with no special powers/accomplishments/roles), but frankly bumbles around like a bunch of TOTAL idiots with no insight into basic human nature (ANY half-way inteligent person could have told them what NOT to do, which they obviously did).
I will not be looking into this serial at all!
I liked the world building and the two men, but I found that it lagged a bit towards the end and at the very end there was a twist that just made no sense to me. So actually this is 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. It's more than ok, but less than good. What I did like it that it created a new world, with Protector (weredogs) and Guardians (their life bonded partners.) That world felt very well thought out and real, and I appreciated the world building. I liked Eli Parker but it was hard to get a sense of the real man before the trauma altered him. He was sick and thus passive for a lot of the book. I had a clearer sense of Greg, whose life was empty enough that a new dog could take it over and fill it. When the dog turned out to be a Protector (something outright mentioned in the prologue that I had read first) then his life really was turned inside out. I felt the villain aspect was way too drawn out and too heavy handed. But I would read more from Cooper West based on this. It's a curious world he's created and it was fun to visit...
This is what I was hoping for! I'm fascinated by the world of Guardsmen, Handlers, and Protectors that West has created, and while the first book (The Protector) didn't quite live up to my expectations, this book did and then some!

I'm reviewing the free short story (Rescued A "Parker's Sanctuary" Story, which serves as a prequel - go download it now!) together with the book (Parker's Sanctuary) because in my opinion they really do need to be read together. While the short story is told by Parker, the book is told solely from Greg's point of view and I think is a better book because of it.

There's so many things here to like here. The world-building is great, of course. The characters are sympathetic and interesting. Greg has no idea what he's getting into, though adapts well as he goes. Parker is shocked to find he's a Protector (weredog) at an age far older than any Protector has ever manifested and struggles to adapt to new senses, feelings, and a rigid tradition where Protectors are second-class citizens. The latter aspect is something I found particularly interesting, and I love how West has built this into the book's popular culture. I'm very impressed how the author has set up a world with a lot of possible narrative threads to follow. The occasional sex scenes are pretty damn hot, too!

The pacing of the story keeps things moving along at a brisk clip. The suspense builds nicely - the tension and wanting to see how it all worked out kept me up entirely too late reading! My only complaint is a small detail that was thrown in at the last minute that could have used more explanation, but the story did not suffer for it.

It would probably be best to read these in order (The Protector, Rescued, Parker's Sanctuary), even if the first book drags a bit. The payoff in the second book is well worth it. I would recommend this series highly!
