Owlflight Valdemar Darian Tale Book 1 Mercedes Lackey Larry Dixon Books
I tried this book when it first came out and hated it because the first few chapters just repeated the same whining from the main character over and over and over and over...This came out recently for Kindle and I decided to download it for $2.99 and see if I still disliked it.
Those first few chapters, yes, I did. It felts like Lackey and Dixon were trying to fill space. But then the story livened up and it was sort of fun. Nothing like the Arrows or Herald Mage series...but ok.
The issue comes with the digital edition. It's full of errors - apparently because of the scanning of the pages. I noticed the same thing with another of Lackey's books that was recently made available for Kindle. I'm now wondering if my digital copies of her Arrows and Herald Mage books, which I bought last year but haven't read through yet, are also full of errors.

Owlflight Valdemar Darian Tale Book 1 Mercedes Lackey Larry Dixon Books Reviews
Excellent story. Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorite writers. Will be back for the other 2 in the series.
Young man's heart crushed after loosing his parents. Lost his teacher when trouble visits his village. Found family and love when the hawk brothers came in to his life. Knows that he is cared for.
I really like the Owl Mage trilogy in the Valdemar series, Owlflight is the first in the trilogy. I enjoyed the characters of Darien and Keisha in these three as much as I did Elspeth and Darkwind in the Mage Winds trilogy. I also liked the Mage Storms trilogy, which is chronologically between Mage Winds and Owl Mage. All great reads and I can recommend just about anything Mercedes Lackey has written.
Owl Flight is the story of Darian, a precocious teenager, unwillingly apprenticed to mage Justyn after his parents (trappers) fail to return from one of their extended hunting trips. Resenting Justyn and believing him to be incompetent senile old man, Darian 'acts out' by running away and slacking off on his daily chores. This causes trouble with the local villagers who believe Darian does not act appropriately 'grateful for the charity they have given him. The hostile environment makes Darian wish he could run away from his problems and do as he pleases.
Punished by his mentor, Justyn, for slacking off, he is sent into the woods one day to gather mushrooms, and his village is attacked by raiding barbarians. Darian is befriended by the Hawkbrothers (a tribalesque group of people), and forms a friendship with Snowfire, a Hawkbrother hunter/scout.
Together with his newfound friends Darian must find a way to free the village of Errold's Grove from the ruthless clutches of the Bear Clan barbarians.
While Darian's whining and self-pitying attitude can get annoying at times, I found Darian and his mentor Snowfire believable. I especially liked Snowfire and the other Hawkbrother characters and would like to learn more about him. I admit, I was pleased to read about a character that was not a herald, and it was nice to learn how some of the more provincial characters view things. I am anxiously looking forward to reading to picking up a copy of the sequel! Great Work MS. Lackey and Mr. Dixon!
A rebellious orphan, taught by the village mage, was in his village when it was attacked. He was caught by the bad guys and rescued by a Hawkbrother. The adventure only begins there. He meets differs species and loved this new life till he finds out that the villagers didn't escape. Great book it goes on from there . I can't wait for the next one. I already have bought it.
This is the second time I've read this book. The first time was when it first appeared in my local library twenty years ago. I had forgotten just how good it was. Once I started reading, I just had to keep going.
Mercedes Lackey is near the top, if not the very top, of my must read list for a very good reason. Her books combine great plots, great writing, and incredibly complex fantasy worlds. This book is one of her best.
The story is very enjoyable, and the author does a good job showing what a young man who has the experiences the main character does would be thinking. The narrator of the audiobook is ok, but he does several things that are very distracting. For example, the main character is named Darian, but the narrator pronounces it so that it rhymes with Leon, and emphasizes both the first and third syllables of the name - drives me up the wall! In addition, whenever the narrator is voicing one of the Taleydras characters, he really emphasizes the “h” and “r” sounds in a way that makes me think of the Count character from Sesame Street - it makes it hard to pay attention to the story instead of trying to figure out what kind of accent the narrator is attempting. Overall, the story is 5 stars and the narrator gets 3, so I am giving this 4 stars.
