Where to begin . . . LOL. The Devil's Cat was decent as far as this series goes, and a million times better than the rancid fifth and final entry, The Devil's Laughter, but oh, man! It's still lacking. Too much time is spent on "developing" cardboard characters and not enough on the gore and perversion that made the original trilogy such a guilty pleasure back in the '80s. Not to say this book didn't have some, but those sections seemed brief and spaced too far apart from each other. The other problem with most of them is they involve minor characters we don't care about, which lessens the impact. And there are so darn many of these bland, stupid townsfolk weaving in and out of the story, that they're pretty much impossible to keep track of.

In a more capable writer's hands, this novel could have really been so much more than it is . . . but would a more capable writer even touch something this trashy? Nope! But somebody had to, and that's why God gave us William W. Johnstone, king of '80s crap-horror and author of hundreds of bad novels (some more entertaining than others).

The story is yet another of Johnstone's rightwing rip-offs of Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot, only with not just vampires, but werewolves, cat people, escaped maniacs, flesh-eating swamp zombies, and sex-crazed Satanists thrown in. Oh, and an army of possessed cats. It's a real monster mash, but none of it makes a lick of sense. Did I mention there's Cajuns, too? They're not monsters, but they do talk an awful lot of French in this book, which gets annoying fast.

As in the first three books, "God Warrior" Sam, his reformed witch wife Nydia, and precocious young son, Sam, Jr., turn up in a small redneck town being targeted to be taken over by Satan through his living and undead minions. Only this time, Sam and his family have Dog with them. Guess what that is spelled backwards? Yup, you guessed it . . . Sigh. A heavenly pooch, the perfect nemesis to the Devil's Cat! Anyway, as usual, Sam rallies the local rightwing Republican Christians into a vigilante group to kill pretty much everyone else in town, who all stop bathing because they're too busy fornicating and conducting human sacrifice. Seriously, that's how he knows who's side they're on. By bad B.O.! It's dumb as hell but nobody buys this trash for the plot.

If you're going to pick this anti-masterpiece up, I recommend getting the original 1987 Zebra Books paperback with the "Horror Hologram" cover. Look: It's a cat! It's the Devil! It's both! What's not to love? I mean, I can still remember seeing this book in the checkout line of my local supermarket back in '87 and thinking how awesome that hologram was. It took me 25 years to actually remember to buy it, but it always stuck in my head as one of the weirdest, cheesiest horror covers ever made.

But for the "best" this horror series has to offer, get the original trilogy: The Devil's Kiss,The Devil's Touch, and The Devil's Heart. Then, if you're not burned out, maybe get this. Avoid the last book The Devil's Laughter unless you're a diehard Johnstone fan (but read my hilarious review of it).

The Devil Cat William W Johnstone 9780821720912 Books Reviews

Thank you for not repeating ad nauseum the horrific sexual trials. Love the addition of humor, especially near the end.
Action from beginning to end her dog bark. A great book in the series
Great book worth reading
These were a favorite of mine in the 80's, glad I found them for .
Awesome author
Was purchased as a gift for my dad. He loves Wm Johnstone writing. I haven't read it, but he says it's a great book and would recommend it to others. He's nearly 80 years old and reads at least a couple of books a week. He has asked for all of the books by Wm W. Johnstone I can find. Guess they are pretty good. Going to have to take time and ready some of his.
Great book, great series!! This is the best out of the series so far. Still has the good vs evil, the gore the great horror but this one is actually better because he toned it down on how graphic it was. It wasn’t too over the top as was the one before this one. If you enjoyed the style of late 70s and 80s horror definitely check this series out a good gory fun read!
