Reckless Magic StarCrossed series Book 1 eBook Rachel Higginson

This was a good story desperately in need of a good editor. I enjoyed the story enough to finish this book and the following book and a half, BUT, in order to get through them I had to turn off the part of my brain that knows the difference between "passed" and "past", between when to use commas and when to use semi-colons, and the difference between "I" and "me". People who "smirk" all the time need to be punched, not loved. Never s smile, just a smirk. And attacking thugs who "simper"? Good grief. The mind boggles at the image.
Finally, Eden never says anything. She never speaks, shouts, mumbles, mutters, yelps. She is either shrieking or whining. She sounds like a brat.
I finally gave up during the third book. Despite an engaging story, the poor writing was just too painful. A good editor could have made this an excellent series.

Reckless Magic StarCrossed series Book 1 eBook Rachel Higginson Reviews

I would give this book 2 1/2 stars if I could. My biggest problem with the book was the poor writing. There was NO editing for this book. Unless someone's talking, all you have to do is skim and you'll get the idea of what's currently happening just fine. Don't bother reading every word.

Most of the book is very repetitive and not very much happens. Blah.

When someone is talking, the author uses "you see" waaaaayy too much, and often without a comma after it. She uses the word "Ok" instead of "Okay" or "okay" or even "ok." No, it it's always "Ok" even in the middle of a sentence. Also uses "of course" too much, and "anyways" is not a word.

ANYWAY, I liked the story well enough by the end of the book, but it's not really enough to keep me going so I probably will not buy the next book. But I might get desperate for something to read sometime, you never know.
Ok.....I will start with this......I liked the story here. I really did.
Pros
Good Story, likeable characters, a bit of mystery, giddy attraction. These are all good things. I made the story fun and enjoyable. It made me come back and want to finish the book.
Cons
OMG there are times when I wondered if this book was written by a thirteen year old. The way Eden talked and behaving the first three quarters of the book, I had a really hard time believing she was sixteen. She is so childish and timid I wanted to flick her in the nose half the time. This is an announcement to all authors DO NOT use the word anyways! It makes you sound illiterate.
All that being said I am intrigued enough to read the next book.
I struggled through this book and could not finish the second book. I keep comparing Eden to my kids I raised and many others I have known and all I can say is Eden is unbelievably stupid. The author has Eden behave irrationally at times just to further the story and it does not work. I know 16 year olds can have there issues but Eden is supposed to be a bright girl so these lapses into complete imbecilic behaviour ruin the story. Then repeatedly telling us how HOT her boyfriend is and acting like a rutting cow and using that as an excuse to act like a complete idiot just ruined an interesting plot that could have been a good story. Eden was commanded by the Prince to stay home and also ordered by the resistance leader to stay home so her going to Romania anyway, knowing she could be in danger or get resistance members killed was the turning point for me.
No I can't recommend this book, it's not terrible but it is definitely not a 5 star book. Seeing so many average books with 5 stars has made the rating system useless to me.
So Eden Matthews lives this tragic life where magic is exploding out of her body and no one feels it's necessary to tell her anything. This triggers a chain of events of getting thrown out of school and placed in her last ditch effort to stay in private school. Kingsley is like some snobby magical school in Nebraska and the crown prince happens to be in attendance. Anyway, unlikely friends, danger, resolution, and then set up for the next book takes place.

Here's what I liked Hmm ...

Here's what I didn't like A weak willed, idiotic heroine who can't do a thing for herself. Eden is terrible. Adults making terrible decisions - as in Eden and Avalon are a special breed among the Immortals, they definitely have a need to know. Amory, the principal at magic school, didn't want Kiran and Eden to meet, and didn't think them meeting by chance would happen. Yet he has them both start on the same day and apparently the entire junior class has the same schedule. Nah, I can see how Amory would think he was safe from them meeting.
Insta-love. Yep. A look in the eyes and there it was. They even described their love like Romeo and Juliette and how it was the most romantic plays. Heh, I remember that play being about the folly of young love.
Data dumping, stiff dialogue, and exposition were done terribly. I don't want to come off as if I am bashing the author. There's a good story in here, it just needs rewriting, really good editing, and shrugging off the Twilight-like cliches and tropes.
